The Discworld Series consists of several “sub series”. The books aren’t labeled according to the series they belong to, and the books can be read and enjoyed without reading them in order (phew!). But to get the most pleasure out of them, reading the books in their proper order is best.
Can I read Hogfather as a standalone?
You can read this book on it’s own and you don’t have to read the previous books to understand it. I don’t see any direct connections between storylines in the Death novels, even though the reading order line the four Death novels up in chronological order.

Should I read all of Discworld?
You do not have to read the Discworld in order to be able to understand all of it, though any novels that are set in Ankh-Morpork run the risk of introducing you to the Watch without knowing who they are, which isn’t a spoiler, but more a disappointment for you not knowing the back story.
Are Terry Pratchett books any good?
Terry Pratchett, back in 1983, was a good fantasy author. But nothing more. Honestly, the first ten books, while better than average, aren’t as good as his later works. What that taught me was that Pratchett didn’t emerge from the womb, fully formed as exceptional humorous fantasy author.
