Do you need to be good at calculus to be an engineer?

Do you need to be good at calculus to be an engineer?

Most engineering degree plans require three semesters of calculus. Analytic geometry uses the principles of calculus and trigonometry to determine limits, vectors, integrals, mean values and derivatives. One of the more advanced math functions engineers must understand is differential equations.

Should I major in engineering if I’m bad at math?

So if you struggled with math in high school, don’t worry. It’s completely normal and shouldn’t deter you from majoring in engineering. The best mathematicians and engineers don’t go into teaching secondary education because the pay SUCKS!

Should I take calculus to become an engineer?

Don’t let the fact that you don’t see the redeeming social value of calculus get in the way of becoming an engineer! Yes, in engineering school the math sequence can be intense. Some of the classes will kick your butt. Suck it up!   Every one of us have taken classes in which we “toughed it out.”

How important is calculus and physics in Computer Engineering?

First and foremost, don’t worry, computer engineering and computer science are not focused on calculus or physics, but instead on logic and, in some areas, probability and statistics. Most CS/CE major require calculus but not as a pre-requisite, so you can just take the class in college. I don’t think physics will be of critical importance at all.

Why is calculus so hard to learn?

It’s a subject where every year the calculus in the maths that you do gets harder because every year the other subjects that you study require harder and harder calculus to even understand what’s going on. But you’re exactly right in that “Just because you’re struggling now doesn’t mean you won’t do better later.”

Is it possible to be a good engineer without being good at math?

Yes, but you have to be willing to struggle. I went into engineering mainly because I was interested in math and physics, not because I was particular good at them. I would have fit in better academically studying politics, or what not, but i decided to diversify my capabilities.
