Learning 2D animation on your own is very doable. Since I’m mostly self-taught, I get asked occasionally by would-be animators, “How do I learn animation?” For those with a school nearby and some time on their hands, it’s not a problem.

What education level does an animator need?

Animators and other multimedia artists typically hold a bachelor’s degree in animation. This degree may qualify graduates for work as video game designers, art directors, and film and video directors. Students can earn a bachelor’s degree online on a part-time or full-time basis.

It’s unlikely you’ll find an apprenticeship that will take you straight into the director role, but you might find an apprenticeship as junior animator or as a 2D artist, that you could use as a first step to becoming a director.

But unlike most jobs, there’s no clear path to becoming a director. The same goes for being an animation director. Some start out as animators, some story artists (storyboarding) and some transition from live action, never having animated a day in their life.
