Who founded Dehradun?
Dehra Dun was founded in 1699, when the heretical Sikh Guru Ram Rai was driven out of the Punjab and built a temple there. During the 18th century the area succumbed to successive invaders, the last of whom were the Gurkhas (ethnic Nepali soldiers). When the Gurkha War ended in 1816, the area was ceded to the British.
