Are Shimano 9 speed cassettes interchangeable?
Yes, 7/8/9 speed Shimano rear mechs are all interchangeable as long as you have the correct shifter for the number of gears on the cassette. the actual difference in the width of cassettes is negligeable between 8 and 9 speed and only a small difference to 7 speed so nothing to worry about there.
Are all 9 speed cassettes compatible?
Up through 9-speeds, all cassettes use very nearly the same width of sprocket teeth, and will work with 7/8 or 9-speed chains. Old Uniglide 6-speed cassettes have larger spacing between sprockets, and like older freewheels, have the same shifting issues.
How many teeth can Alivio handle?
Chain-wrap capacity: up to 45 teeth.
Are freewheel and cassette interchangeable?

Can I put a smaller cassette on my bike?
Theoretically, you could shorten your chain to accommodate the smaller (largest gear) cassette. However, I never install a new cassette unless I install a new chain as well. Cassettes and chains tend to “wear” to one another and one can sometimes encounter difficulty if you don’t.
Are all 9 speed chains the same?
Chain width is about 6.7 mm. Front chainrings are less sensitive to the thickness of chain used. Otherwise, all the 9 speed chains will work well, regardless of the manufacturer: Campagnolo, SRAM and Shimano.

Are bike cassettes interchangeable?
In some cases, it is possible to run a cassette from a different brand than the rest of your drivetrain. SRAM and Shimano cassettes, on either road or mountain bike, are interchangeable with each other as the spacing is the same between the sprockets.
Is Shimano Alivio good?
Alivio is another small step up in gear hierarchy, it’s still a 9 speed drivetrain this one offers lighter components and reportedly better shifting than Acera and Altus. Shimano reckons this little lot is for good quality recreational mountain bikes, we saw it specced recently on a new 2020 Trek Calibre costing £750.
What happened to the Shimano Alivio 9-speed Deore?
It is not renamed per se, but Shimano have now dropped development of 9 speed Deore and is concentrating on the 10 speed side of it which is now better than the old 9 Deore construction wise. It was the top 9 speed group, now that is Alivio which is getting the trickle down tech from older 9 speed (and 10) groups.

You can buy a 9 speed 11-34 and 12-36 and swap the cogs about to make a 9 speed 11-36… but some gear jumps may be excessive. So is personal preference. Alivio 9 is basically the Deore 9 replacement, as two Deore sets were running concurrently for a while.

What is the difference between 12×36 and Alivio 9?
Alivio 9 is basically the Deore 9 replacement, as two Deore sets were running concurrently for a while. Really informative. Thanks! Let me ask two other things: 1- Regarding the gear range, even though 12×36 has a shorter one, I live in a part of my country where we have particularly steep climbs. Some 15-30\% 8km long.
