Most bullets make small sonic booms when flying through the air, which to our ears sound like a loud, distinct “crack!” For the Pentagon’s special forces, that makes it hard to be sneaky about what they’re shooting.

When you are downrange and someone is shooting at you, you hear it without a doubt. You really hear this more than the gunfire once you realize those sounds are bullets.

Why do you hear a whizzing sound when you get shot?

If you’re far away, the bullet travels faster than the boom, so you’ll hear the whizzing as the bullet goes past you before you hear the sonic boom it created. If you’re really far away (say, a mile or so), you may only hear the whizzing — but that means that somebody is shooting at you and just missed. That would be a great time to hit the dirt!

You can most definitely hear the bullets snapping over the top of the wall and earthen berm, through the target, and into the impact berm some yards in front of you. It’s loud enough that you wear hearing protection in the pits as well as when firing.
