Common questions

Does piston ring direction matter?

Does piston ring direction matter?

Rings with a groove in the outside diameter and a “pip” mark or dot on the side must be installed with the groove toward the bottom of the piston and pip mark towards the top of the piston. It is a good idea after installing all rings on the pistons to recheck each ring on each piston for correct installation.

Does the bevel on a piston ring go up or down?

The general rule is that bevels go down and dots/top marks go up. Note, that the word “TOP” does not mean that this is a top ring! But rather, that side of the ring should face the top of the engine.

Can you put piston rings upside down?

Piston rings usually have a chamfer on the back side that uses the gas pressure to help seal the piston ring against the cylinder wall. If the ring is installed upside down, that won’t work properly. Also, the top ring is often different from the second ring. Mix them up, and it won’t work properly, either.

Which way do pistons go in?

The DI piston shows the forward facing directional arrow while the standard 4-valve piston shows which side should be positioned towards the exhaust valves. In any type of high-horsepower and/or high-RPM application, piston-to-valve clearance is critical.

Which Piston Ring Goes On top black or silver?

The black/dark ring goes on the bottom. The silver one goes on top. One side of the rings will have a dot or a couple letters or some kind of mark to indicate that is the “top” of the ring.

What happens if you install piston rings wrong?

Compression Rings Rings installed in the wrong groove or wrong side up can lead to excessive oil pumping, excessive blow-by, and in some cases completely dry up the bore, causing ring and cylinder scuffing as well as accelerated wear. (Compression rings must never be spiraled on the piston.)

What happens if you install pistons backwards?

Installing the piston backwards would increase the rod angle (not reduce it as stated in the article), possibly putting it in a more favorable position for pushing down on the crank during the power stroke, but also increasing side loading in both the power stroke and compression stroke.

Which way do piston rings face?

It’s also crucial that the rings be installed right side up, especially rings with an inside bevel. Most top compression rings have a dot on the surface that indicates the side that should face upward when installed. A ring that is installed upside down will lead to excessive oil consumption.
