Travel guidebook company Rough Guides recently ranked the most beautiful countries in the world for 2019. Canada was named the second most beautiful country in the entire world, beating out several popular destinations like New Zealand, Iceland, and the United States to claim the #2 spot.

My initial answer is no, because from a European perspective people in the USA appear to have an attitude that they are not part of the world, it is the USA and the world. This may have been the attitude of many other countries in the past, not least the British in the 19th century, but it no longer is.

If the thought of traveling to Europe entices you, but also makes you feel flat broke, there is a solution. There are plenty of places around the good ol’ USA that have that peculiar European flair.

Europeans who visit the US are often taken aback by the amount of American flags they see hanging outside homes, businesses, schools, banks, and churches. Patriotism isn’t quite as strong in most European countries, and even when it is, people don’t necessarily have the same attachment to their national flag.

What do you dream of when you dream about Europe?

We dream of castles, ancient Rome, and beautiful cities. Europeans, for all I know, dream of wide-open spaces, cowboys, and motorcycles roaring up the California coast. People dream of what they do not have. I wonder how many people in the US would love to travel to Europe but can’t because of the expense, inability to get time off of work, etc.
