Why did Morgoth want the Silmarils?

Morgoth cared about them because he loved the light of the trees as much as anyone but he wanted to have this light for himself alone. He was jealous of all beautiful things – which he could not create. The silmarils did glow. So living in paradise in the presence of the trees profoundly changed those elves who did it.

What happened to the third Silmaril?

The three Silmarils had different eventual fates. One was recovered by Beren and Luthien: this stone was later taken to the Valar in the West by their descendant Earendil, as a token of repentance. The returned Silmaril was set into the sky by the Valar where it shone as a star.
