Why do we like freckles?

They’re like tiny hickeys from the sun, aka stimulation via UV rays. It’s an enthusiastic response from your melanin, so it makes sense that many freckle-havers want them to shine and not be covered up by foundation.

Why are freckles special?

According to How Stuff Works, melanocytes are cells specifically designed to protect our skin from the harmful UV rays from the sun. Freckle-faced folk also have a special gene that our even-skinned counterparts do not, the MC1R gene, which balances skin pigment.

What happens if you pick a freckle off?

Scratching off a mole will probably cause some bleeding, but should not require medical treatment. However, if a mole continues to bleed, it should be examined by a dermatologist. Note however, that a growth on the skin that continually bleeds may be a warning sign of skin cancer.
